Why ATLS?

The American College of Surgeons (ACS) Committee on Trauma developed the current ATLS® Program in accordance with the College’s dedication and efforts to improve care of the injured. This program is designed for all doctors and aimed at bringing about uniformity of care at the primary place of treatment. All doctors involved in trauma care will benefit from this course.

The program is directed towards the golden first hour of initial assessment and primary management of injured patients, starting at the point of injury and continuing through initial assessment, life-saving interventions, re-evaluations, stabilization, and when required, transfer to centre offering specialized and definitive care.

Student Course Content

The two and one-half-day course will have an MCQ pretest and consist of lectures and practical skills stations. Interactive lectures include Initial Assessment and Management, Airway & Ventilatory Management, Shock, Thoracic Trauma, Abdominal Trauma, Head Trauma, Spine & Spinal Cord Trauma, Musculoskeletal Trauma, Injuries due to Burns and Cold, Paediatric Trauma, Trauma in Women, and Transfer to Definitive Care.

 

Practical sessions include initial assessment and management procedures on simulated patients, oro- and nasotracheal intubation, ventilation techniques, cricothyroidotomy, shock assessment and management, vascular access, fluid resuscitation monitoring, pulse oximetry, x-ray identification of chest injuries, needle and tube decompression of the chest, periocardiocentesis, diagnostic peritoneal lavage, head and neck trauma assessment and management, x-ray identification of spine injuries, spine and spinal cord injury assessment and management, musculoskeletal trauma injury assessment and management, and triage scenarios.

 

ATLS Provider Course

The ATLS® Student Course teaches interactively established standards of trauma care and practical life-saving skills. This course is designed for all doctors who care for injured patients. Classes are limited to a maximum of 24 doctors.

ATLS Instructor Course

The two-day ATLS® Instructor Course is designed for outstanding doctor graduates of the ATLS® Student Course who are identified as having instructor potential. The ATLS® Instructor Course focuses on how to teach the ATLS® Student Course.

 

Preference will be given to candidates who are committed to teaching at least 2 courses a year and those who have done the provider course in the UAE.

 

Fee: AED2000

 

Completion

The physician must attend the entire course and demonstrate knowledge and proficiency as per the course requirements. There will be assessment (MCQ & practical skill) tests at the end of the course.

 

Upon successful completion of an ATLS® Course, the American College of Surgeons Committee on Trauma issues documents of successful completion to the doctor participants.

 

Credits

As an organization accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education, the American College of Surgeons designates this continuing medical activity as meeting the criteria for 19 credits (ATLS® Student Course) and 11 credits (ATLS® Instructor Course) in category 1.

 

It is also approved by the American College of Emergency Physicians for 19 credit hours (ATLS® Student Course), and 11 credits (ATLS® Instructor Course) of ACEP category 1.

Applications will be considered strictly on merit by the organizing committee. Only applications accompanied with full fees will be entertained.

Travel, Accommodation & Meals

Candidates should make their own arrangements for travel / visa, meals & accommodation. Complimentary breakfast, lunch, tea / coffee & snacks are provided at the course site during the course. We do sometimes negotiate special room rates with hotels in Fujairah. Booking should be made directly with the Hotel. Please enquire about the offers at time of booking.

 

Future Courses

Four provider and one instructor courses are planned per year ( January, April, September, November). Only those applicants will be considered  who have deposited the full fee.

 

 

Refunds / Cancellation

Full fee refund if cancelled at least 2 months from the date of the course.
